Holy Cow!

Toni Meneguzzo, an international renown photographer and a very likeable guy from Italy recently presented his latest impressive and personal project called „Go Shala“! In the Berlin fashion store Quartier 206 you can find some of those extraordinary 90 pictures of holy cows on display.

„Go Shala“ is an anthropological research on the Hindu tradition of Holy Cows, uniquely painted and dressed only during specific ceremonies and celebrations.

Collecting these images of the Hindu Cows in India took Toni five years overall – travelling throughout the country and always on the look out for these amazingly painted animals.

As Toni Meneguzzo describes it himself, you see this art painted on a walking canvas. The cow is carrying the painting while being the painting itself:

„Adorned with garlands of fresh flowers, with decorations of colourful shiny trinkets, the cows are prepared, and this is the most striking design element, painting their coat and horns with organic pigments that have specific references: the pink is used to reflect the color of the skin of Radharani, who is the companion of Krishna, the shepherd of the cows; the yellow of turmeric is the solar divinity that illuminates the world, and so on.

The pigments are thrown on the animal with an artistic flair that recalls the informal painting of Jackson Pollock.
The sacredness of the temple, the Go Puja, is celebrated by painting the bindi in the middle of the forehead of the animal, just like all the faithful humans.
After making the photograph, the animals were cropped, making them float on the milky white, to emphasize the artistic work done by the locals on the cows because the surrounding rural and bucolic scenery is so imbued with Indian folk icon to mitigate the stylistic and artistic contributions used to celebrate the perpetual ritual of life and the sanctity of the animal.“
There is a book available with all this beautiful cows and you´ll find out more about Toni at his website: www.tonimeneguzzo.com

Never mention age or colour

Never mention age or colour

Never mention age or colour

Recently I overheard a conversation at a gallery opening. He was a lawyer and suddenly made this clear and decisive statement, which really impressed me:

He said: „I never mention age or colour.“

Ok. As a lawyer this might be a crucial decision for doing a good job.

But I think this to be a very inspirational thought to integrate in our every day life.

Some time ago I personally decided for myself to not join those endless conversations about age any longer. Because the longer I used to think about growing older, the more important it seemed to be.

And since I made that decision to NOT feed this thought with attention anymore, it just vanished.

By the way, I am 46. And will get older, hopefully ;)

It´s often just a conscious decision to make:

Why talk and discuss or complain about things which just happen to be?

Why not just accept them?

This might be a good introduction for…tadaa…!

The one and only Iris Apfel, who calls herself a geriatric starlet!

She has not only a wonderful unique way of styling herself. Most importantly she´s really being her true self.

Iris is 94 years old, living in New York and has had a very creative and fulfilling career as an interior designer ( she even worked for the white house!).

She came to international fame after her hugely successful exhibiton at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2008. People just couldn´t get enough of her and since then adore her as a fashion icon.

There´s also a documentary about her called IRIS, whose style mantra is: „More is more – less is a bore!“

Is this art or can I eat it?

Is this art or can I eat it?

Is this art or can I eat it?

I´m really blessed! I have such talented friends and this time I ´d love to introduce to you a very special one! You can sense her verve and spirit already by her name: beautiful Carmen Morales! Olè :)

Now – besides you can have the most wonderful and happy time with Carmen, this girl is dedicated to food. Or better, the art of food.

For her own label „Sweet Table Rocks“ she´s just performing magic all the time. But most importantly – this all just does not only look and taste amazing, she is only using organic and most healthy ingredients.

And this ambition makes Carmens handmade little cakes and cookies even more special. Can you imagine how time consuming her work is?

I once shared an exhibition of my CUBELINS with her, and the visitors were just super excited by her food:)

So – if you like Carmen to rock your sweet table, too, you can find her on Facebok (link at the end of page) or Instagram, her website is coming soon!

What`s new Pussycat?

What`s new Pussycat?

What`s new Pussycat?

As I´m always on the look out for something interesting, I´d love to surprise you with something really new you´ve never heard of.  But – I have to be decent here, this would be a desperate and futile task to try. And generally spoken, is there really anything completely new out there?  Isn´t it ultimately just all about developing well known things and putting them into a new or unexpected context?

There is one great and successful technique in art demonstrating this idea: the assemblage of different pieces and forms and thus creating a new whole. It´s the collage. I used to consider collage as an inferior technique, maybe because I did too much of it in kindergarden ;)

But lately I came across so many amazing and beautiful collages – in various mixed medias – that I totally changed my mind here. One of my favorite artists has developed a very unique approach to this technique:

Mickalene Thomas – this is a name worth remembering! This girl´s work is modern, trendy, pop art and glamorous!

And it´s huge! This is Mickalene sitting on her sofa in her New York studio. But have a closer look!

This sofa is definitively costumized – and it is often the basis of Mickalenes works. Here she arranges the pictures of the women she´s going to portray – and you can already see how the collage effect comes into live.

She uses mostly huge wooden panels for her collages – acrylic paint, enamel and rhinestones.

Always central in her pictures is the black woman. They always gaze out from between contrasting arrays of color and pattern.  Mickalene often relates to her memories as a child in her grannys living room.

She says about her view : I am constantly contemplating or challenging various stereotypes around Black women. All of the women in my work have a profound sense of inner confidence, and recognize themselves as the visible subject. Their directness is filled with agency and self-knowledge.

And here´s a little sidestory I found so likeable about Mickalene. Throughout her studies of art she always considered herself as not good enough in painting portrays. But that´s how she finally developed her unique style of portraying – converting them into pop art faces.

This lady from Switzerland has a big, big heart for all kind of labels, tags and etiquettes!

Yes, those sometimes annoying itchy labels we usually cut out of our shirts. With loads of labels Pia Fischer is creating the most extraordinary fashion and amazing accessories. Some of her works are extremely outstanding – for example her unbrellas – they look like they sprang out of a fairy tale.

Pia Fischer has a shop in Berlin, Schöneberg, crammed with hundreds of her creations and when I met her, she was working on her sewing machine. And as she told me, that´s what she´s always doing – sewing the whole day long. It´s just what she loves doing most!
